Is your breakfast destroying your health or causing autoimmune disorders?

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

Two years the Environmental Working Group (EWG) dropped a bombshell when they posted an article titled “Breakfast With a Dose of Roundup? Weed Killer in $289 Million Cancer Verdict Found in Oat Cereal and Granola Bars” They tested many samples of oatmeal and cereal products found in almost every home in America. Once again, Big Food as perpetrated another horrific lie as the expense of our and our children’s health, that their products are “healthy”. If you haven’t read the article, you must. Especially if oatmeal, oat products, cereal bars, like kind bars, nature valley etc and bread is a part of your diet or family’s diet.

In summary, a dangerous pesticide that is sprayed on GMO crops was found in dozens of brands like Quaker, Nature Valley, Kind bars, and many other well known brands.

“Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the Monsanto weed killer that is the most heavily used pesticide in the U.S. Last week, a California jury ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages to a man dying of cancer, which he says was caused by his repeated exposure to large quantities of Roundup and other glyphosate-based weed killers while working as a school groundskeeper.

EWG tested more than a dozen brands of oat-based foods to give Americans information about dietary exposures that government regulators are keeping secret.”

”Popular oat cereals, oatmeal, granola and snack bars come with a hefty dose of the weed-killing poison in Roundup, according to independent laboratory tests commissioned by EWG.

Glyphosate, an herbicide linked to cancer by California state scientists and the World Health Organization, was found in all but two of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats. Almost three-fourths of those samples had glyphosate levels higher than what EWG scientists consider protective of children’s health with an adequate margin of safety. ”

This systematic poisoning is going on right under our noses and it’s dangers are being kept secret at the highest level at the companies.

EWG tested more than a dozen brands of oat-based foods to give Americans information about dietary exposures that government regulators are keeping secret. In April, internal emails obtained by the nonprofit US Right to Know revealed that the Food and Drug Administration has been testing food for glyphosate for two years and has found“a fair amount,”but the FDA has not released its findings.”

Why do they use this toxic chemical you ask? Faster harvesting means more profits.

“Each year, more than 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on American crops, primarily on “Roundup-ready” corn and soybeans genetically engineered to withstand the herbicide. But when it comes to the food we eat, the highest glyphosate levels are not found in products made with GMO corn.

Increasingly, glyphosate is also sprayed just before harvest on wheat, barley, oats and beans that are not genetically engineered. Glyphosate kills the crop, drying it out so that it can be harvested sooner than if the plant were allowed to die naturally.”

Why GMOs, Glyphosate, Parkinson’s and Celiac are connected

There is also a strong link between gut health and overall health. We are seeing autoimmune disorders and gut disorders at epidemic rates all over the world. We know that glyphosate has been linked to cancers, but also has a significant impact on our gut health. A paper published by the stated

In this paper, we have systematically shown how all of these features of celiac disease can be explained by glyphosate's known properties. These include (1) disrupting the shikimate pathway, (2) altering the balance between pathogens and beneficial biota in the gut, (3) chelating transition metals, as well as sulfur and selenium, and (4) inhibiting cytochrome P450 enzymes. We argue that a key system-wide pathology in celiac disease is impaired sulfate supply to the tissues, and that this is also a key component of glyphosate's toxicity to humans.”

This is why I tell my clients and everyone I know that has Celiac or NCGS (Non CelInc Gluten Sensitivity) that going gluten free isn‘t enough. We have to avoid GMO and glyphosate finished products as well because they are also triggering gut imbalances and issues like leaky gut, IBS, Crohns, celiac and even Parkinson’s.

“...in a remarkable case study (Barbosa,2001), a 54-year-old man who accidentally sprayed himself with glyphosate developed skin lesions six hours later. More significantly, one month later he exhibited symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Movement disorders such as Parkinsonism are associated with gluten intolerance. Figure 6 shows plots of glyphosate application to corn and soy alongside plots of deaths due to Parkinson's disease. These and other connections will be further explored in future research.” The link between Parkinson’s and gut health has been well documented.

How do we do avoid these health destroying additives? Well the best way is eating organic foods and and buying those organic products from companies who have gone through all of the steps to ensure that their food has not been contaminated with GMO‘s and do not use glyphosate in the finishing of their products. many of these brands will dawn the labels of “GMO free” or “ verified GMO free”. In addition they need to make sure that they are certified organic by organizations such as Oregon Tilth or QAI. Unfortunately USDA organic cannot be trusted. This is yet another reason why advocate so heavily for a plant-based organic diet. Many people say that eating this way is expensive but you will find that it is always best to choose quality over quantity and in order to do that you’re going to have to give up a lot of the health harming foods like meat, dairy and processed foods. They’re very heavily contaminated with GMO and glyphosate residues anyway. When you do this you free up a lot more money in your budget to buy the healthy foods that your body so desperately needs.

If you need help navigating the grocery store, creating a gluten-free or plant based meal plan or are interested in how to eliminate foods you suspect may be causing illness or gut issues, feel free to reach out to me and set up a consultation.
